This week on the Rutledge Perspective Podcast, I am joined by the amazing Dr. Shayla Toombs-Withers and we will be talking about a major key in unlocking true wellness, your diet! Dr. Toombs-Withers is a board-certified physician in family medicine & obesity medicine, and the founder of Essence of Health Wellness Clinic based in Chattanooga, TN. Her belief is that we should have our food be our medicine!
The health disparities that black communities face are no secret. It’s also not a secret that we have the highest rates of diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer. However, did you know that a large part of these health conditions are preventable by simply moving our bodies and also by what we consume? A lot of illnesses can be traced back to stress and we deal with a lot of stress in black communities due to factors outside of our control but what we can control is what we put on our plate.
Dr. Toombs-Withers is here to share her story of how switching to a plant-based diet helped her overcome her bout with abdominal pain. She also talks about the benefits of a plant-based diet and how we can rethink & unlearn common misconceptions surrounding it. Ultimately, her goal is to get people to participate in their own health and to get more plants on their plate…NOW!

🔑 The essence of health is in you!
🔑 Keep saying something to your doctor if something doesn’t feel right. Even if you are doing well with all the medical screening and tests.
🔑 If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will make time for your illness.
🔑 Bonus: Plant-based eating doesn’t have to be more expensive. You can buy things in bulk like brown rice, dried beans, and oatmeal.
